Professor Tan writes middle grade novels and early readers that help kids build reading confidence. Her books aim to reflect Asian American experiences while encouraging empathy and imagination in all readers. She has won the Honor Award for Middle Grade Literature, given by The Asian Pacific American Librarians Association, and the OTTER Award in 2024 for Best Early Reader from the Washington Library Association.

In Professor Tan’s Children’s Literature course, students explore how the ideas of childhood have evolved over time and how social power dynamics have intersected with the concept of childhood. She finds teaching this course enjoyable and thought-provoking, as students revisit books from their own childhood with fresh perspectives.

Subject: Wherever you’re from, find your path at SFE

Preheader: Hands-on learning, expert faculty, and a path to a greener tomorrow.

Work alongside faculty who care about making a difference.

Dear <Name> —,

Choosing the right college can be tough, but I think you’ll find the School for the Environment (SFE) at UMass Boston is a great place to explore your interests and make an impact.

I’m Helen Poynton, the undergraduate program director for the SFE. Like a lot of the faculty here, my path wasn’t a straight line; it meandered more like a winding river.

I thought my environmental work would be something I did in my spare time, and that I needed to study something practical to make a living. So I went to college for biochemistry. Once I got to grad school, I realized I could combine my love for molecular biology with my passion for the environment and started designing molecular tests that help detect chemicals and measure their impact on ecosystems.

Unlike me, you don’t have to wait until grad school to bring together your diverse interests, make a difference, and build a rewarding career. That’s why we created the SFE, to let you do all of that from the start! Our faculty and students at the SFE come from all kinds of backgrounds, like marine science, engineering, conservation biology, and environmental law, but we all share a common goal of tackling environmental challenges and helping communities and the environment thrive. You’ll take classes with award-winning faculty who will take you into the waters of Boston Harbor and the streets of Boston, focusing on project-based learning and other hands-on, innovative teaching methods.

Come see UMass Boston for yourself. I can’t wait to meet you!

All the best,
